Hiking the Appalachian Trail: Day 102 - Crossing into Connecticut, Kent Adventures, and Trail Life (2026)

Welcome to Connecticut, the 10th state on the hiker's journey! Day 102 of the trek brings a much-needed break from back-to-back long days, allowing for a leisurely start at 8:30 am. The hiker's slow start is understandable, given the need to break in new shoes and the physical demands of the trail. The first mile is easy, but the next few miles involve a climb over the Connecticut border, marking a significant transition into a new state.

One of the highlights of the day is the opportunity to soak the dogs' feet in a river, providing a refreshing break and a chance to appreciate the natural surroundings. The hiker then takes a short diversion to check out a covered bridge, adding a touch of local culture to the experience. However, the real challenge lies in the steep climb of 700 feet in less than a mile, which tests the hiker's endurance and determination.

The hiker's pace is relaxed, and the plan is to complete just 20 miles with a HERO in and out of Kent, CT. The last few miles into Kent feature two steep ups and downs, which are trudged through slowly and methodically. The hiker's determination is evident, despite the physical demands of the trail.

Once in Kent, the hiker heads to a convenience store for cold drinks and then to Cozzy's on Main for dinner. The food is delicious, and the hiker takes the opportunity to resupply with a couple of days' worth of food. The hiker then heads back to the trail, eager to reach the Stewart Hollow Brook Shelter before dark.

The hike goes well, especially since some of it goes right along the Housatonic River, providing a lovely backdrop to an evening hike. The hiker's experience in Connecticut is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the state, and the journey continues with a sense of accomplishment and a newfound appreciation for the trail.
