The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, boldly states that traditional leaders are indispensable to the process of nation-building and effective governance. He asserts that these institutions play a pivotal role in fostering good governance and calls for more vigorous dedication to building a cohesive nation.
In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Emir Sanusi expressed his conviction that he does not require constitutional backing to offer advice to the President or governors regarding national matters. "Do I really need someone to tell me to speak up? Should it take a constitutional mandate for me to approach the President and voice my concerns, saying, ‘Mr. President, I believe this needs attention’?" he questioned, asserting that his authority comes from the very people he represents.
Sanusi added, "I don’t rely on the Constitution to inform the governor about what direction we should pursue. My leadership is grounded in the trust and authority granted to me by the community I serve."
He challenged the idea that formal constitutional language is necessary to legitimize the role of traditional rulers in governance. "What section of the Constitution explicitly states that traditional leaders exist solely to provide counsel? While we acknowledge the executive powers held by governors, the context of our society has evolved."
Furthermore, during the broadcast, Sanusi underscored the significance of inclusive political participation. He emphasized the necessity of increasing women’s representation in governance, highlighting their essential contributions to achieving a more inclusive political environment. He called for more women to hold positions in elected offices, arguing that they play critical roles in advancing governance.
Sanusi did not shy away from addressing the issue of domestic violence against women, firmly denouncing it as unacceptable. "It is fundamentally wrong for a man to resort to physical violence against a woman under the pretense of cultural norms," he stated. He pointed out that some men exploit their power to dominate women, stressing that all individuals, particularly women, deserve protection regardless of cultural narratives.
He explained, "Violence is a universal issue that transcends cultural boundaries; it stems from power dynamics where men hold authority and women lack adequate protection. In many cases, men misuse this power to oppress women."
Furthermore, he pointed out that in our society, those who are vulnerable often suffer the most. "Women frequently endure violence, along with young children, the impoverished, and individuals with disabilities. They all find themselves as victims in various scenarios."
