Bold headline: Unpaid fuel bill lands cruise ship in Beihai jail-like hold-up, stirring questions about the industry’s financial fragility.
The Blue Dream Melody has been detained at Beihai Port after the Beihai Maritime Court ruled in favor of a marine fuel supplier owed roughly $599,000 for bunker fuel delivered in Shanghai in October 2025.
A court order issued on February 11 remains active until the outstanding debt is settled or the shipowner provides suitable financial security. This move effectively halts the vessel’s movements pending resolution of the claim.
This arrest comes soon after the ship stopped carrying passengers. In late December, Shanghai Blue Dream International Cruise Co., Ltd. announced that the ship would suspend all sales and sailings beginning January 4, citing the need for systematic hardware upgrades and maintenance.
The 42,000-ton vessel, which began service in mid-2024, was in Beihai as part of its final operational schedule before the planned shutdown. The cruise line has not issued a public statement about the arrest or how it plans to address the debt. However, Russian media reports from January suggested the ship might be positioned for a new operator in the Russian Far East.
Beihai port authorities confirmed their compliance with the court order and noted they are providing routine services to the detained ship in the interim. The situation highlights the ongoing tension between operating costs, debt obligations, and contingency planning in the cruise industry, especially for ships that pause operations temporarily or shift to new markets.
